Technical examination of virgin surrounded by flowers, by Jan Van Kessel I

Abstract

Technical examination allied to the conservation treatment of Virgin Surrounded by Flowers provided a deep knowledge to the main questions posed by this painting: Which materials (pigments, fillers and mediums) are present at the Virgin Surrounded by Flowers? Did van Kessel follow the painting practice documented on 17th century treatises? Is this work a collaboration of artists regulated by the Antwerp Guild? If it is a collaboration of artists, which artists participated? To answer these questions it was required several exams and analytical methods such as: ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) photography, IR reflectography, radiography, optical microscopy (OM), staining tests, gas chromatography, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), to further supplement the technical evidence from the painting.

Los exámenes técnicos junto con los tratamientos de conservación aplicados a la Virgen rodeada de flores han proporcionado un profundo conocimiento de las principales cuestiones que planteaba esta pintura: ¿Qué materiales (pigmentos, cargas y aglutinantes están presentes en la obra?; ¿Siguió van Kessel las prácticas documentadas en los tratados del siglo XVII?; ¿Es un trabajo de colaboración de artistas regulado por el gremio de Amberes?; ¿Si es una colaboración, qué artistas participaron? Para contestar a estas cuestiones se realizaron diferentes exámenes y análisis como: fotografías de ultravioleta (UV) e infrarrojo (IR), reflectografía IR, radiografía, microscopía óptica (MO), tinciones, cromatografía de gases, microscopía electrónica de barrido con espectrometría por dispersión de energía (SEM-EDX), especroscopía infrarroja por transformada de Fourier (FTIR).
