Abstract
Population aging is one of the greatest social and healthcare challenges of the coming decades, particularly in countries like Chile, where it is projected that by 2050, more than one-third of the population will be over 60 years old. This demographic shift brings multiple challenges for the psychosocial well-being of older adults, in a context where Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play an ambivalent role: while they can promote social inclusion, they can also generate exclusion and deterioration of human relationships. This doctoral thesis focuses on two phenomena related to the use of ICTs: digital participation and perceived phubbing. The former represents an active and functional use of technology, with potential benefits for well-being. The latter, in contrast, refers to the act of ignoring a person during a social interaction in favor of a mobile device, and is considered a form of relational exclusion with possible negative impacts on mental and emotional health. This study aims to analyze the effects that both dimensions have on key variables of psychosocial well-being in older adults: life satisfaction and geriatric depression. In addition, a statistical mediation model is proposed, in which loneliness and social isolation function as explanatory mechanisms to better understand these relationships. The research followed a quantitative, correlational, and multivariate design. The study included a diverse sample of 324 elderly people from the Bío-Bío and Ñuble regions in Chile, who voluntarily participated through structured surveys...
