Fantasmas coloniales: la descolonización británica y la ampliación ibérica de la Comunidad Económica Europea, 1981-1986

Abstract

Este texto estudia la posición política del Reino Unido ante la ampliación ibérica de la CEE, presentando especial atención al impacto que dos de sus colonias –Gibraltar y Hong Kong– tuvieron durante el proceso negociador. Con el apoyo de fuentes primarias y secundarias, sostengo que el futuro de estas colonias determinó el respaldo de Thatcher a esa ampliación. Mientras el gobierno británico condicionó la entrada de España en la CEE a la mejora de la comunicación fronteriza con Gibraltar, apoyó sin fisuras la incorporación de Portugal, a pesar de que esta generó un agravio comparativo entre la colonia portuguesa de Macao y la británica de Hong Kong

This paper examines the political factors that informed British stance on the Iberian enlargement of the EEC, with a special focus on the role of two British colonies –Gibraltar and Hong Kong– in the negotiations. Drawing on both archival material and scholarship, I argue that the future of these British colonies determined how Thatcher approached the Iberian enlargement of the EEC. While the end of the restrictions on the border between Spain and Gibraltar was a British requirement for the Spanish membership of the EEC, Thatcher supported unconditionally Portugal’s accession, despite it created an unfair treatment for Hong Kong in comparison to the Portuguese colony of Macau.
