Abstract
The work analyzes the evolution of the Spanish television fiction production industry during the era of video-on-demand platforms (2017–2023), a significant period that reshaped the Spanish television ecosystem in terms of consumption and production volume. The research combines two studies: one quantitative and one qualitative. The first one examines and classifies the main characteristics of production companies, compiling a total of 154 companies responsible for 301 series in this period. The second study analyzes the creation and production systems used by these companies. The resulting data is complemented by information from 13 semi-structured interviews conducted with active industry professionals. The results outline a scenario with opportunities for both experienced and emerging production companies, as the increase in operators has broadened possibilities. In the creation and production of series, three coexisting models are identified: internal development, external development, and a mixed model. It concludes that platforms represent a new phase for television, reshaping series production models. The industry maintains an oligopoly: a few production companies have expanded their participation, while others, less experienced, are sought after by platforms to provide originality and a distinct authorial style.
