Escandinavia en la España de los Austrias: de terra incognita a parte integrante de la sociedad europea

Abstract

En la segunda mitad del siglo XVI y las primeras décadas del XVII, la imagen que en España se tiene de Escandinavia es la de un territorio recóndito y brumoso, en el que se sitúan todo tipo de fenómenos sobrenaturales. La idea de la determinación climática de los pueblos y la vigencia del goticismo aportan una visión respectivamente negativa y positiva de las gentes septentrionales. La Guerra de los Treinta Años acerca cognitivamente al imaginario geográfico de los españoles estas tierras y sus habitantes, que pierden desde entonces su carácter misterioso.In the second half of the 16th and the first decades of the 17th century, the image Spaniards have of Escandinavia is that of a far away and misty land where all sorts of supernatural phenomena take place. The idea of climactic determinism together with goticism offer respectively a negative and positive image of the northern peoples. The Thirty Years War brought closer this land and its people to the geograhical imaginary of Spaniards, losing forever in the process their misterious character.
