Abstract
Se estudian, en el contexto de la colección a la que pertenecieron, las dos ediciones virgilianas de José Nicolás de Azara. El objetivo principal de Azara era que fueran correctas y hermosas. Azara interviene en el proceso de edición. Las ediciones tomadas como base por Azara y su colaborador E. Q. Visconti fueron muy acertadamente elegidas. Se describe la estrategia utilizada para la producción de las ediciones. El resultado es una obra de extraordinaria calidad tipográfica y texto razonablemente bueno para su época,con una atención especial a la ortografía y a la identificación y delimitación de los versos que conviene mantener o eliminar. Puede vincularse a un tipo de edición que se desarrolla en toda Europa en el siglo xviii por los mejores editores de la época y que recupera características de las ediciones renacentistas. A pesar de sus defectos, estas ediciones y la colección en que aparecen son, por su notable repercusión internacional, hitos que conviene reivindicar en la aportación hispana a la difusión de los clásicos.
The editions of Virgil by José Nicolas de Azara are here studied in the context of the collection to which they belonged. Azara’s main objective was that they were correct and elegant. He is personally involved in the editing process. Azara and his collaborator E. Q. Visconti used as the basis of their work the best editions of the time. We describe the strategy used for the production of the new editions. The result is a work of extraordinary typographic quality and a reasonably good text for its time, with special attention to orthography and to the identification and delimitation of the verses that should be maintained or eliminated. It can be linked to a type of edition that is developed throughout Europe in the Eighteenth century by the best publishers of the time and that recover characteristics of Renaissance editions. In spite of its weaknesses, Azara’s editions and the collection in which they appear are, due to their notable international impact, milestones that should be claimed in the Hispanic contribution to the dissemination of the classics.
