Pagliacci senza filtro: Una propuesta escenográfica para la ópera Pagliacci de Ruggero Leoncavallo

Abstract

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una investigación sobre “Pagliacci”, de Ruggero Leoncavallo, con el fin de crear una escenografía adecuada, manteniendo la visión artística de la autora. “Pagliacci” se conoce, sobre todo, por el aria del personaje principal: “Vesti la giubba”, o como la mayoría lo conoce: “Ridi Pagliaccio”; sin embargo, la razón de ser y la trascendencia cultural de “Pagliacci” no es tan conocida. Ruggero Leoncavallo, proveniente del sur de Italia, tenía grandes ambiciones, pero nunca logró el mismo éxito que obtuvo con “Pagliacci”. Y es que esta obra supera el paso del tiempo, por ser tan emocionalmente efectiva, cautivando a los corazones más endurecidos. El poder de esta música captó la atención de la autora y quiso aplicar las técnicas del arte de acción a las que se introdujo durante su paso por la universidad. Las crudas emociones expresadas por Pagliaccio en ese aria en particular, parecían ideales para perseguir un proyecto basado en la “katarsis” o liberación de emociones, como lo logra el arte de acción. Además de ser emocionalmente expresivo, “Pagliacci” es un verdadero representante del espíritu verista. Nos presenta a un personaje que rehumaniza un símbolo del sur de Italia que encarnaba sus atributos más estereotipados y negativos. Se trata de Pulcinella, un personaje originalmente perteneciente a la commedia dell’arte.. Leoncavallo, propone una visión más completa y que se acerca más a la realidad del sur de Italia, contada por alguien que realmente la ha vivido. Todas estas cosas fueron claves para entender el verdadero significado de “Pagliacci” para poder presentar una escenografía adecuada para la ópera.

This work is aimed at achieving a more in-depth knowledge of “Pagliacci”, by Ruggero Leoncavallo, in order to create an appropriate scenography, while maintaining the author’s artistic vision. “Pagliacci” is best known for the main character’s aria: “Vesti la giubba”, or like most know it by: “Ridi Pagliaccio”, but not many know exactly what was going on around the time this opera was created by Ruggero Leoncavallo. A Southern Italian man that had great ambitions, but only had one true masterpiece to remember him by. Although a one-hit wonder, this piece has proven itself emotionally effective time and again, captivating the most hardened of hearts. The power in this music captured the author’s attention, and wanted to apply the newfound techniques in “action art” she had been introduced to during her time at university. The raw emotions expressed by Pagliaccio in that particular aria, seemed ideal to pursue a project based on the “katarsis” or release of emotions, like the “action art” achieves. Other than being emotionally expressive, “Pagliacci” is a true representative of the Verismo spirit. By presenting us to a character that re-humanizes a stereotypically negative Southern symbol, Pulcinella. He brings the focus back to the truth in the South as told by one who has really lived it. All these things were key in understanding the true meaning behind “Pagliacci” to be able to present a suitable scenography for the opera.
