Abstract

Traditional dance is one of the main manifestations of Spain’s intangible cultural heritage and forms part of the collective identity and memory of many regions. However, the Community of Madrid is often considered detached from these traditions due to factors such as urbanization, tourism, the loss of oral transmission, and limited institutional attention. This is reflected in the scarce presence of this intangible cultural heritage in state archives and in the lack of academic studies on traditional dance in Madrid. Nevertheless, numerous cultural associations play a fundamental role in its preservation and transmission by organizing gatherings, performances, workshops, and other activities related to this type of heritage. In addition, these associations have studied and collected unique materials, creating their own archives of great value. This research analyzes the importance of these associative archives in preserving memory and transmitting traditional dance in the Community of Madrid, while also investigating the most appropriate ways to archive these practices, highlighting the value of audiovisual collections. To this end, the archive of the cultural association “Arrabel” is used as a case study, combining a theoretical review with a practical proposal for archival organization. The ultimate aim is to highlight associative archives as key spaces for safeguarding Madrid’s intangible cultural heritage.
