Abstract
Self-Perceptions of Aging (SPA) are one of the variables with predictive capacity regarding health and quality of life in older adults. However, the available evidence concerning their relationship with objective cognition is limited compared to other variables such as physical health, mortality, and mental health. This doctoral thesis aims to synthesize the existing literature on the relationship between SPA and cognition, provide a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing SPA in the Spanish older population, and offer empirical evidence regarding this relationship and its interaction with loneliness. To achieve these objectives, the thesis integrates the results obtained from three studies. The first study aimed to synthesize and analyze the available evidence on the relationship between subjective aging, cognition, and cognitive decline, analyzing sources of variation in terms of the dimensions evaluated, the measures used, and moderator variables. The second study provided psychometric evidence of the Spanish version of the Aging Perceptions Questionnaire Short Version (APQ-S) in a sample of 210 community-dwelling Spanish older adults. The third study evaluated the relationship between the different dimensions of SPA and objective cognition, as well as the interaction of such perceptions with loneliness in a sample of 184 older adults...
