Abstract
The doctoral dissertation entitled "Civilization and Its Discontents in the Shipibo-Conibo culture" raises an approach from psychoanalysis to an Amazonian indigenous culture belonging to the Pano ethnolinguistic family. The overall objective of it is to characterize the discontent in the Shipibo-Konibo culture. The proposed specific objectives are: To examine the notion of Civilization and Its Discontents in Freud, to examine the Lacanian notion of capitalist discourse and to describe the impact of so-called capitalist discourse on the Shipibo-Konibo. To achieve these objectives, the thesis is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter the notion of discontents in culture is examined from theoretical developments of Freud and Lacan. The first section of this chapter examines how, according to Freud, the existence of any culture (Kultur) require an drive (trieb) renunciation, and discontent (Unbehagen) is concomitant with such waiver. But at the same time, it is noted that, according to the Freudians developments, each culture develops specific embodiments of this discontent. That is, Civilization and Its Discontents has a necessary structural dimension; and a contingent historical dimension. The second section of the chapter examines the notion of capitalist discourse outlined by Jacques Lacan from developments of Freud and Marx. Within the framework of the theory of the discourse of Lacan, it arises how within the so called capitalist discourse, the link between subjects is not established from the Other but mainly from market requirements. In times of globalization of the capitalist system, it is proposed that this notion is useful to approach the understanding of civilization and its discontent in the Shipibo-Konibo culture...
