Abstract
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) results from the compression of the median nerve at the wrist caused by many different factors. The typical symptoms are pain (more often nocturnal), paraesthesiae, sensorial hypoestesia and loss of motor function in the distribution of the median nerve. There are many conservative treatments commonly used in mild and moderate CTS. Surgical treatment is usually offered to individuals who have persistent CTS symptoms, severe sensory disturbance or thenar motor weakness. There are numerous non-surgical options for the treatment of CTS. Neural gliding exercises are a treatment technique that may improve symptoms relates to CTS, nevertheless, there are discrepancies regarding the efficacy of neural gliding exercises for the management of CTS. The aim of this study is to perform a systematic review assessing the efficacy of neural gliding exercises for the management of CTS. A search was performed between February and June 2013. Sixteen studies met inclusion criteria. There are not consistently favorable results toward neural gliding. However, the studies revealed a possible trend toward improves outcomes with the use of neural gliding. The efficacy of neural gliding is not clear. More research is necessary to determine which population may respond better to this treatment.
