Empoderamiento de mujeres rurales en procesos organizativos emergentes: el caso de una cooperativa cafetalera en Guatemala

Abstract

Este artículo analiza los procesos de empoderamiento de mujeres rurales en el marco de la creación de la cooperativa cafetalera IX AXOL, en el noroccidente de Guatemala. A partir del reconocimiento de las desigualdades estructurales de género en el ámbito agrícola, el estudio se enfoca en las trayectorias de transformación que emergen cuando las mujeres se integran a una organización en su fase inicial, donde aún se están configurando relaciones, liderazgos y marcos de acción compartidos. Mediante un enfoque cualitativo y participativo, se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas y talleres participativos que permitieron recoger información situada y generar espacios de reflexión colectiva. El análisis, basado en un marco que contempla las dimensiones personal, relacional y contextual del empoderamiento, revela avances significativos en autoestima, participación comunitaria y apropiación progresiva del espacio organizativo. Persisten, no obstante, condicionantes estructurales como el acceso limitado a la tierra, recursos productivos y servicios básicos. Los hallazgos muestran que el empoderamiento es un proceso interrelacional, que se construye colectivamente cuando existen contextos que reconocen los saberes previos, promueven el liderazgo emergente y generan valores compartidos. El estudio evidencia que, incluso en procesos organizativos emergentes, pueden generarse condiciones favorables para el fortalecimiento del reconocimiento mutuo, la participación activa y el desarrollo progresivo de capacidades colectivas.This article analyzes the empowerment of rural women in the context of the creation of a coffee cooperative in northwestern Guatemala. Starting from the recognition of structural gender inequalities in the agricultural sector, the study focuses on the challenges and opportunities faced by women as they engage in an emerging organizational structure. Using a qualitative and participatory approach, the research seeks to understand how evolving organizational dynamics influence women’s autonomy, personal and social development, and socio-economic integration; to analyze the extent to which participation in the cooperative contributes to building decision-making capacities and strengthening collective cohesion and power; and to identify the factors that enable or hinder these processes in a context shaped by cultural, economic, and environmental barriers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participatory workshops conducted at different moments within the cooperative’s initial phase of development. The findings reveal progress in self-esteem, sense of belonging, and community participation, alongside persistent limitations in access to productive resources and decision-making spaces. The study shows that even within emerging organizational processes, it is possible to create favorable conditions for strengthening mutual recognition, active participation, and the progressive development of collective capacities.
