Abstract

In this paper we argue for the ongoing relevance of the approaches offered by the social sciences in the field of health promotion to understand the strategies deployed by social subjects on the one hand, and to outline the guiding principles of preventive interventions on the other. More specifically, we put forward a model for analysis which is based on the results of a research project on HIV testing practice and constructs of risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) which was initiated at the request of the Institute of Public Health for the Madrid Region. The objective of the research was to suggest strategies for intervention in the field of health promotion among MSM. We conclude that a sound and explicit theory of the social subject is indispensable for undertaking research in the field of intervention to guard against HIV risks.
