dc.description.abstractA discretized form of the one-dimensional Dirac equation is solved to study relativistic band structures. Properties of periodic continued fractions are used to find the dispersion relation inside allowed bands. The Mathieu potential is considered and it is found that relativistic effects cause a reduction of the width of allowed bands and gaps.
