Abstract
El mercurio (Hg) es un metal de transición con una amplia distribución en la naturaleza, tiene diversas formas químicas con farmacocinética compleja. Es un metal extremadamente tóxico, muy admirado en tiempos pasados y responsable de numerosas intoxicaciones. La exposición al metilmercurio, en la actualidad, se debe al consumo de pescado salvaje y marisco. Los peces con mayor contenido en mercurio son los grandes depredadores que ocupan niveles tróficos superiores en la cadena alimentaria. Peces de gran tamaño que residen en dominios pelágicos como el emperador o pez espada, tiburón, atún, marlín o mamíferos como las ballenas. España es uno de los países con un consumo más elevado de pescado y en diferentes estudios poblacionales es uno de los que presentan mayores concentraciones de mercurio en sangre...

Extremely toxic and hugely admired in the past, it has been responsible for many fatal intoxications.Nowadays the main source of exposure to methylmercury is wild fish and shellfish consumption.
