Abstract
This dissertation documents the process of producing a multimedia investigative report on alleged abuse, physical and humiliating punishment, psychological manipulation, and financial pressure exerted on patients and their families at the Zeus detoxification centre in Catalonia, currently under investigation by the National Police’s Destructive Cults Unit. Through nine testimonies from former patients, two former employees, and documentary sources evidencing irregularities in the centre’s health registration records, the project reconstructs a systematic pattern of allegedly abusive practices framed within dynamics characteristic of coercive groups, with historical precedents in American attack therapy and judicial support in the 2025 Spanish ruling on Gestalt therapy. The investigation, intended for publication in elDiario.es, involved a lengthy and complex methodological process marked by the vulnerability of the sources, negotiations with the National Police to coordinate publication timing without compromising the ongoing police investigation, and the ethical management of situations such as the withdrawal of consent by one of the former patients.
