Agustinos en la Armada española contra Inglaterra (1588): objetivos, actuaciones y participantes

Abstract

Desde tiempos inmemoriales la Iglesia ha estado presente en fortalezas, campañas militares y hospitales de sangre. Una intensa labor pastoral-espiritual, formativa y humanitaria llevaron a cabo las órdenes religiosas a través de la administración de los sacramentos, la predicación y la atención a los enfermos y heridos, en tiempos del Antiguo Régimen. El presente trabajo da cuenta del significado e importancia, en su contexto histórico, del Día de Inglaterra, nombre que recibe la batalla naval entre el rey Felipe II de España y la reina Isabel I de Inglaterra, mantenida en el verano de 1588, centrándose en la participación de la Orden de San Agustín, el número de agustinos alistados y el nombre de cada uno de los intervinientes en la Armada Española, los «que parecían invencibles».Since time immemorial the Church has been present in fortresses, military campaigns and blood hospitals. An intense pastoral-spiritual, formative and humanitarian work carried out the religious orders, through the administration of the sacraments, the preaching and care of the sick and wounded, in times of the Old Regime. The present work gives an account of the meaning and importance, in its historical context, of the Day of England, name that receives the naval battle between King Felipe II of Spain and Queen Elizabeth I of England, maintained in the summer of 1588, focusing in the participation of the Order of Saint Augustine, the number of the Augustinians enlisted and the name of each one of the intervening ones in the Spanish Navy, the «that seemed invincible».
