Alonso de Burgos y el Colegio de San Gregorio de Valladolid: saber y magnificencia en el tardogótico castellano

Abstract

La realización de esta tesis doctoral tiene como objetivo avanzar en el conocimiento sobre el Colegio de San Gregorio de Valladolid. Se trata de una construcción que siempre ha ocupado un lugar destacado en la historiografía del gótico peninsular e incluso cuenta con una bibliografía relativamente abundante. Estudiada habitualmente de manera fragmentaria, era manifiesta la conveniencia de un trabajo exhaustivo que profundizara en su singularidad y relevancia histórico-artísticas. Sorprendía especialmente la inexistencia de una monografía que abordase el estudio arquitectónico del conjunto, realizando una reflexión razonada acerca de la posible autoría, la configuración de los espacios, la tradición tipológica en la que se enmarca o las particulares circunstancias que rodean el origen de esta institución colegial, fundada por Alonso de Burgos (†1499).Para alcanzar dicho objetivo, la tesis lleva a cabo una amplia contextualización del colegio que se inicia abordando la promoción artística episcopal en Castilla durante el último período de la Edad Media, con singular interés en los espacios del saber. Para ello se han analizado cinco casos en los que prelados reformadores acometieron empresas artísticas orientadas a mejorar la formación del clero y ensalzar la importancia del conocimiento. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to progress in our knowledge of the College of San Gregorio in Valladolid. This building has always had a central role in the historiography of the late Gothic architecture in the Iberian Peninsula, even boasting a relatively abundant bibliography. Commonly studied in a fragmentary manner, the convenience of a thorough study that delved deep into its uniqueness and historic and artistic relevance was evident. It was especially surprising that no monographic analysis of the building’s architecture existed, one that considered the possible authorship of its design, the configuration of its spaces, the typological tradition that it follows to the circumstances that surround the origins of this college founded by Alonso de Burgos (†1499).To reach this goal, this thesis undertakes an ample contextualisation of the college, started by addressing the artistic promotion of bishops in Castile during the late Middle Ages, taking into consideration the spaces of knowledge. In order to achieve it, five study cases have been analysed. They were artistic enterprises promoted by reforming prelates and aimed at improving the clergy’s education and acclaiming the importance of knowledge.
