José Cabrero y Mons en la tertulia del Café de Pombo

Abstract

La tesis doctoral sobre José Cabrero y Mons, el pintor desconocido que aparece retratado en La tertulia del Café de Pombo, se inicia con un interés concreto: descubrir quién es el único personaje de este lienzo emblemático de José Gutiérrez-Solana del que apenas se tienen datos. La figura de este artista ha interesado a investigadores como Javier Barón Thaidigsmann, jefe de Conservación de Pintura del siglo xix del Museo Nacional del Prado; Juan Manuel Bonet, director que fue del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, o Enrique Lafuente-Ferrari, historiador y Académico de las Bellas Artes de San Fernando, sin que hasta el momento se haya podido realizar una monografía sobre él. En los preliminares de la tesis doctoral, se constató que José Cabrero y Mons vivió en el París de entre finales de siglo xix y principios del xx y que conoció a los representantes del impresionismo francés y a otras figuras relevantes del arte como Van Gogh,Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne o Picasso. En 1909 volvió de París y, en los años veinte, Ramón Gómez de la Serna le invitó a su tertulia literaria en el Café de Pombo y fue el único al que José Gutiérrez-Solana le dedicó un retrato exento.Además, en algunos estudios realizados sobre Iturrino, su íntimo amigo, así como sobre Agustín Riancho o Pablo Picasso, se mencionaba que muchos pintores le apreciaban y le tenían en alta estima...

This doctoral thesis on José Cabrero y Mons, the unidentified artist who features in La tertulia del Café de Pombo (A Meeting of Friends at the Café de Pombo), had its origins in curiosity as to who the unidentified artist in this commemorative group portrait is and why so little is known about him. The question as to who the particular artist in this group portrait is has interested researchers such as Javier Barón Thaidigismann, Head of Conservation in 19th Century painting at the National Museum; Juan Manuel Bonet, art critic and writer, and Enrique la Fuente-Ferrari, a historian and Fine Arts academic, but, to date, no monographic study on the person in question has been written. The introduction to the doctoral thesis tells us of José Cabrero y Mons’ life in Paris as the 19th Century turned into the 20th. He was acquainted with artists from the Impressionist Movement and knew such luminaries of pre-modern and modern art as Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne and Picasso. On Cabrero’s return from Paris in the 1920s, Ramón Gómez de la Serna invited him to his literary get-togethers at the Café de Pombo and, of all the gathering, Cabrero was the only one of whom José Gutiérrez Solana did an individual portrait. From studies of Francisco Iturrino, his close friend, and others on Agustín Riancho and Pablo Picasso, we are led to understand that many contemporary painters appreciated him and held him in high esteem...
