Abstract
The Reinterpretation of Themes and Motifs from Literary Romanticism in Carlos Ruiz Zafón Tetralogy El cementerio de los libros olvidados. This doctoral thesis analyses the relationship between the 19th-century Romantic tradition and its reflection in contemporary fiction through Carlos Ruiz Zafón tetralogy El cementerio de los libros olvidados. In this sense, the novelist’s work does not merely reproduce the characteristics of Romanticism, but rather rewrites and updates them in a modern context. The study argues that Romantic themes and motifs remain relevant today, as they are capable of adapting to new aesthetic and cultural sensibilities. The main aim of this research is to demonstrate that there is a reworking of the themes and motifs characteristic of literary Romanticism —melancholy, freedom, passion, fantasy and nature— and to analyse how these are reinterpreted within contemporary fiction. To this end, the study pays particular attention to the narrative devices employed by the author to develop this rewriting, notably intertextuality, the construction of symbolic spaces, and the creation of characters who embody the spirit and conflicts characteristic of the Romantic imagination. It also examines the role of the city of Barcelona as a literary setting which, far from being a mere backdrop, is presented as an allegorical space laden with emotional significance...
