Abstract
Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are the drugs of choice for the prevention of ischemic stroke (IS) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. They have many advantages over their predecessors, vitamin K antagonists (VKA), but are not without risk. Objectives: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of DOACs in relation to the occurrence of major bleeding (MB) events and IS in the BIFAP database. Methods: The study population was obtained from BIFAP, a population-based database of primary care electronic medical records (EHR), which also includes hospital discharge reports and information on drug prescribing and dispensing. Three study were performed: A validation study of MB events in BIFAP was conducted. An algorithm for identifying hospitalization in cases of bleeding was constructed and validated using free-text information in comments from EHR. Hospitalization and anatomic location of bleeds were used as criteria to define MB...
