Abstract
This work is part of the so-called Men's studies that seek to explain what the term masculinity means in a given society, in this case, in Spanish society. The male characters that appear in the family series with the highest audience or impact from 1970 to 2010 have been analyzed to make an outline of what has been considered to be a man during these decades. We aim to establish how the relationship of men with their environement has evolved..and how they have assumed the important social, political, economic and social changes that took place in Spain during those decades: transition from a dictatorship to a democracy, incorporation of women to work outside home, economic progress, evolution to gender equalityin family law and changes in the television market. It has been approached through the analysis of the content of audiovisual productions: dialoguesand purely visual elements; and through film analysis to make a profile of the personalities of men and their relationships with their environment and their reactions to historical and social changes. We can conclude that the values and attitudes associated with traditional masculinity during these decades are maintained in the characters and, when applied to the new scenarios, have resulted in the representation of frustrated men due to their difficulties in adapting to the new values of equality of gender, especially in terms of the distribution of domestic tasks and roles in the couple and in the family.
