Abstract
This paper reflected on the changes faced by libraries in the current century. For the basis of hypotheses, a literature review was conducted in an exploratory research, where it was seen that the process of transformation of libraries is made possible by information technology advances that allow the user to interact with the library, with the librarian and the other users that search for information in and out of that environment. Using a brief history of libraries as a starting point for studies, was reflected on the effects of technology on observed changes, however taking into account the role of society itself to accept new technologies. Libraries have become ever more important to society and especially now, when the internet has caused a significant increase in the flow of information posted daily, and offers unusual facilities that compete at the same time that interact with the library. In order to facilitate the understanding of reflections explained in this work were taken as example the following information units: the Bibliothèque Publique d'Information, the Centre Georges Pompidou, France, the Municipal Library of Cologne, Germany, the Library State Park in Rio de Janeiro and the Library of the Bank of Brazil Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro. It was noticed that in Brazil, the process of change is still time consuming, however, already takes his first steps.
