Intereses religiosos en conflicto: la Compañía de Jesús y Paulo IV

Abstract

El pontificado de Paulo IV (1555-1559) abrió un periodo de incertidumbre para la Compañía de Jesús. La principal causa fue la mala relación de este pontífice con Carlos V y Felipe II que hizo sospechar a Paulo IV que los superiores jesuitas sólo eran fieles a los intereses políticos de la Monarquía Hispana. Tensión, por tanto, entre los jesuitas y Paulo IV que se reflejó en el gobierno de la Compañía, en su crisis del generalato vitalicio, en su intento de reforma de las Constituciones y, desde luego, en la dificultad económica por la que atravesaron los colegios romano y germánico en Roma.

The pontificate of Paul IV (1555-1559) opened a period of uncertainty for the Society of Jesus. The main cause was the bad relationship of this pontiff with Charles V and Philip II that made Paul IV suspect that the Jesuit superiors were only faithful to the political interests of the Hispanic Monarchy. Tension between the Jesuits and Paul IV was reflected in the government of the Society, in its crisis of the ad vitam generalate, in its attempt to reform the constitutions and, of course, in the economic difficulty of the Roman and Germanic colleges in Rome.
