The Iron Age Necropolis of El Toro (Alcubillas, Ciudad Real-Spain)—Combination of Archaeological and Geophysical Techniques with Ground Penetrating Radar in the Area around the Jabalón River

Abstract

The necropolis of El Toro is characterised as a space of prolonged use in northern Oretania. Several important archaeological finds were made in 1975 and 2012, leading to the excavation of six test pits in 2017. Based on the existing legacy data, an extension of the state of knowledge was carried out by combining several geophysical tools. The geophysical tools chosen for this sample consist of a combination of data from two different georadar systems, to which data from a magnetometer survey is added. A series of post-processes are applied to the preliminary results to improve the visualisation and interpretation of the data. The combination of these techniques used at the site is an improvement that helps us to understand these spaces and their interaction with the historical landscape of La Mancha.

La necrópolis de El Toro se caracteriza por ser un espacio de uso prolongado en el norte de Oretania. En 1975 y 2012 se realizaron varios hallazgos arqueológicos importantes, lo que llevó a la excavación de seis pozos de sondeo en 2017. A partir de los datos existentes sobre el legado, se amplió el estado de los conocimientos combinando varias herramientas geofísicas. Las herramientas geofísicas elegidas para esta muestra consisten en una combinación de datos de dos sistemas de georadar diferentes, a los que se añaden datos de un estudio con magnetómetro. A los resultados preliminares se aplican una serie de postprocesos para mejorar la visualización e interpretación de los datos. La combinación de estas técnicas utilizadas en el yacimiento supone una mejora que nos ayuda a comprender estos espacios y su interacción con el paisaje histórico manchego.
