Abstract
RESUMEN: La producción literaria de Flannery O’Connor es una de las más estudiadas del siglo XX, a pesar de su brevedad y el, «a priori», localismo de sus temas y motivos, circunscritos al Sur estadounidense. Sin embargo, la profundidad de sus tramas y personajes han hecho de ella uno de los grandes hitos del canon occidental en el último medio siglo. Aproximaciones tales como los estudios de género, perspectivas raciales o aquellas derivadas del neohistoricismo, se cuentan entre las contribuciones más valiosas para con la interpretación de la obra de O’Connor. Sin embargo, la crítica se ha mostrado tradicionalmente renuente a su estudio desde puntos de vista más «tradicionales» como las recientes investigaciones en materia de literatura gótica han puesto de manifiesto. Así pues, este estudio pretende ofrecer un análisis de «A Circle in the Fire», uno de los relatos más representativos de la escritora, siguiendo los postulados de la literatura folklórica propuestos por Vladimir Propp. A pesar de no ser un texto popular y/o tradicional, sí que comparte muchos de sus rasgos. De este modo, se podrá ver que el universo literario de Flannery O’Connor trasciende incluso lo que la crítica ha venido atestiguando.
ABSTRACT: Despite its brevity and the apparent local focus of its themes and motifs (connected with the US South), Flannery O’Connor’s literary production lies among the most widely analyzed of the 20th century. Nevertheless, the depth of her plots and characters have made an outstanding milestone of the western canon during the last decades out of her. Approaches such as Gender Studies, Race and Ethnicity, or those related to Neo-Historicism are probably the most relevant ones when interpreting O’Connor’s production. However, critics have been much more cautious when adhering her texts to more “traditional” points of view, as shown by the recent publications conducted in the research area of Gothic. Thus, this article aims to offer an analysis of “A Circle in the Fire,” one of the most representatives written by O’Connor, following the functions of folklore stablished by Vladimir Propp. Even though this narration is not a folkloric text, it shares many of the characteristics usually associated with them. In this way, it will be prove how Flannery O’Connor’s literary universe goes even beyond what critics have traditionally assessed.
