Esclerosis múltiple: nuevos tratamientos.

Abstract

La Esclerosis Múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad inflamatoria crónica del sistema nervioso central, de etiología desconocida y de posible origen multifactorial; la predisposición genética unida a factores autoinmunes y ambientales puede desencadenar esta enfermedad. Afecta a gente joven, siendo la edad de aparición más frecuente entre los 20 y los 40 años, más común en mujeres que en hombres. Respecto al tratamiento, no se conoce, hasta el momento, cura para la esclerosis múltiple, pero existen tratamientos que pueden retardar el progreso de la enfermedad. El objetivo del tratamiento convencional es por tanto, controlar los síntomas y ayudar a mantener una calidad de vida normal. Aunque, cuenta con inconvenientes que dificultan el cumplimiento y adherencia al tratamiento. Es por ello, que actualmente es objetivo primordial la búsqueda de nuevas moléculas que faciliten la adherencia y mejoren la efectividad y seguridad de los tratamientos.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease from the central nervous system, it´s etiology is unknown and the origin of it could be multi-factorial; the genetic propensity joined to autoimmune and environmental facts could be the keys to develop this disease. It affects to young people, specially those between 20 and 40 years old and it`s more frequent in women than men. There is not a cure for Multiple Sclerosis yet, but there are many treatments that could delay the progress of it. The aim of the conventional treatment is to control the symptoms and to maintain a good life quality. There are many inconveniences that could make it difficult for the patients to follow the treatment compliance. This is the reason for searching new molecules that could help the patients with the treatment compliance and improving effectivity and security.
