La palmera y la palma: adaptación medieval de una antigua iconografía

Abstract

La palmera y la palma, como síntesis de una parte por el todo, son símbolos omnipresentes en la iconografía medieval. Su origen lo podemos rastrear desde la antigüedad, momento a partir del cual se empezó a dotar a la palmera de unas connotaciones excepcionales que no tuvo ninguna otra planta. Unida a lo sobrenatural y como uia ad caelum conservamos referencias literarias e iconográficas que anclan sus raíces en el mundo griego. Planta indoblegable que sólo se inclina ante Cristo, símbolo supra-martirial y planta del Paraíso, se hace necesario rastrear origen de una tradición arraigada que se fue metamorfoseando y adaptando con el devenir de los tiempos. En este sentido, la época medieval fue fundamental, en tanto en cuanto reinterpretó estos iconogramas con un significado que sigue prevaleciendo a día de hoy.The palm tree and the palm are omnipresent symbols in medieval iconography. The rich meaning it has, makes it necessary to trace the origins of a tradition that was metamorphosed throughout history. In this sense, the medieval era was fundamental. It is at this moment when an iconogram was reinterpreted with a meaning that continues to prevail today.
