Abstract
The precorneal tear film is formed by proteins, mucins and aqueous components combined to form a hydrated gel. This gel is covered with a lipid layer which avoids the evaporation and improves the stability of the preocular tear film. Mucins form a hydrophilic skeleton, in which the aqueous components are included, with mucoadhesive properties and an adequate non Newtonian rheological behaviour (low viscosity while blinking). The lipid layer is constituted by non polar components (exposed to contact with air) and amphiphylic components (exposed to contact with mucins), phosphatidylcholine is in higher proportion...
