The influence of Evangelical theology in the translation and composition of educational books from English into Judeo-Spanish by the reverend Alexander Thomson (1820-1899)

Abstract

Sephardic Jews are normally known by their expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula in the 15th century. After numerous migrations throughout Europe and the North of Africa, most of these ended up settling down in Constantinople, which was encompassed by what has been often referred to as “Sefarad 2” or “magna Sefarad” inthe Ottoman Empire. Thus, Sephardic Jews were mainly attracted to this region due to the privileged social and linguistic status this community enjoyed there. Our study specifically focuses on the study of the second half of the 19th century, when numerous Protestant missionaries arrived in order to convert Jews into Christianity, taking advantage of the fact that they were no longer enjoying the aforementioned thriving period. Besides, Christians were taking advantage as well of the famousTanzimat period (1839-1876), in which Ottoman authorities were open to the influence of countries like Great Britain and the US for political purposes...

Los judíos sefardíes son comúnmente conocidos por haber sido expulsados de la Península Ibérica en el s. XV. Tras diferentes migraciones por Europa y el norte de África, muchos de ellos acabarían recalando en Constantinopla, que formaba parte de la a veces también llamada “Sefarad 2” o “magna Sefarad” en el Imperio otomano, atraídos principalmente por el privilegiado estatus social del que gozaban la comunidad y lengua sefardíes en esta zona. Nuestro estudio se centra específicamente en estudiar la segunda mitad del s. XIX, momento en el cual llegaron numerosos misioneros protestantes con el fin de convertir a su religión a estos judíos sefardíes, quienes ya no disfrutaban de tales privilegios sociales y lingüísticos como en siglos anteriores. Estos cristianos aprovechaban así la oportunidad ofrecida por el Imperio otomano durante el famoso periodo de Tanzimat (1839-1876), el cual, siguiendo fines principalmente políticos, se abría por primera vez a la influencia educativa de países occidentales como Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos...
