Política e identidad en la India : el movimiento Hindutva en la ciudad de Varanasi

Abstract

Esta tesis doctoral analiza el papel central que ha desempeñado el movimiento Hindutva en la transformación sociopolítica de la India contemporánea, destacando su consolidación a través del Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), su brazo político. Se investigacómo este movimiento nacionalista hindú, respaldado por el Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), una de las mayores organizaciones de voluntarios del mundo, ha articulado una red compleja de asociaciones afiliadas y no afiliadas bajo el paraguas del Sangh Parivar, con el objetivo de construir una nación hindú. El estudio analiza el papel que ha tenido el BJP y el RSS en la victoria electoral de las elecciones generales del año 2014, momento en que alcanzó la mayoría absoluta, superando el techo que le habían supuesto gran parte de los analistas políticos en la década de 1990, después de las agitaciones de Ayodhya, en Uttar Pradesh, cuando algunas organizaciones del movimiento Hindutva iniciaron un movilización con el objetivo de promover el levantamiento de un templo dedicado a la deidad hindú Rāma,en el mismo emplazamiento donde se hallaba una mezquita, conocida como Babri Masjid. Tras estos disturbios y el impacto de la implementación de la Comisión Mandal,que establecía un sistema de reservas para las castas más desfavorecidas socialmente, económicamente y educativamente de la India, provocaron que este movimiento nacionalista hindú perdiera muchos apoyos...This doctoral thesis analyzes the central role played by the Hindutva movement in the sociopolitical transformation of contemporary India, highlighting its consolidation through the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its political arm. It investigates how this Hindu nationalist movement, supported by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)—one of the largest volunteer organizations in the world—has structured a complex network of affiliated and non-affiliated associations under the Sangh Parivar, with the objective of building a Hindu nation. The study examines the role of both the BJP and the RSS in the BJP’s victory in the2014 general elections, when the party achieved an absolute majority—surpassing the limits predicted by many political analysts in the 1990s. This came after the Ayodhya agitation in Uttar Pradesh, when organizations associated with the Hindutva movement undertook a pilgrimage to promote the construction of a temple dedicated to the Hindugod Rāma on the site of the Babri Masjid.
