Investigación social y contexto urbano a propósito de The City (1925-2025)

Abstract

Se ha cumplido el centenario de The City (1925), una obra imprescindible para el desarrollo de los estudios urbanos en el siglo XX. Escrito por Robert Park, Ernest Burgess y Roderick McKenzie -con la cuidada colaboración de Louis Wirth- el volumen constituye uno de los hitos sobre los que se erigió la Escuela de Chicago, identificada en esta fase en las coordenadas de la ecología urbana. La obra destaca aún por su agilidad, innovación analítica, estímulo intelectual y las sugerencias de investigación que hilvana. Aunque ha sido objeto de críticas pertinentes, estimamos que The City puede considerarse un patrimonio común de todos los urbanitas. En la efeméride, deseamos rendirle el reconocimiento merecido con una reflexión sobre las pesquisas derivadas de sus presupuestos analíticos y sobre el contexto urbano en que surgió.This year marks the centenary of The City (1925), masterpiece for the development of urban studies in the 20th century. Written by Robert Park, Ernest Burgess and Roderick McKenzie—with the careful collaboration of Louis Wirth—the volume constitutes one of the milestones on which the Chicago School was built, identified in this phase with the coordinates of urban ecology. The work still stands out for its analytical innovation, intellectual stimulation and the research suggestions it weaves together. Although it has been the subject of pertinent criticism, we believe that The City can be considered a common heritage of all urbanites. On this anniversary, we wish to pay it the recognition it deserves with a reflection on the research derived from its analytical assumptions and on the urban context in which it emerged.Enguany s’ha complert el centenari de The City (1925), una obra imprescindible per al desenvolupament dels estudis urbans al segle XX. Escrit per Robert Park, Ernest Burgess i Roderick McKenzie —amb la curosa col·laboració de Louis Wirth—, el volum constitueix un dels fites sobre les quals es va erigir l’Escola de Chicago, identificada en aquesta fase en les coordenades de l’ecologia urbana. L’obra destaca encara per la seva agilitat, innovació analítica, estímul intel·lectual i per les propostes de recerca que entrellaça. Tot i que ha estat objecte de crítiques pertinents, considerem que The City pot ser considerada un patrimoni comú de tots els urbanites. En aquesta efemèride, desitgem retre-li el reconeixement merescut amb una reflexió sobre les indagacions derivades dels seus pressupòsits analítics i sobre el context urbà en què va sorgir.
