Abstract
The backbone of this thesis is to verify, through the application of the scientific method, whether it is possible to make Extremadura's dehesas environmentally sustainable and economically viable by retroinnovating their management. The essential contribution of this work is the confirmation that the application of a set of ancestral agricultural management practices in the current Extremadura dehesa allows its economic and ecological exploitation in an efficient way, unlike the current methods which makeit unsustainable and even lead to its abandonment. Retro-innovation is understood as learning from the past to optimise the current and future progress of the farming enterprise that makes up this pasture ecosystem. It cannot be accepted without further ado that the dehesa as a plant formation of anthropic origin is by nature an unsustainable ecosystem, as we understand that the problems of regeneration have to do, mostly, with specific management circumstances, such as excessive livestock overload, with the forms of management and the species of livestock that live in it...
