«Mouseia» in Roman Asia Minor: Public spaces of culture and institutions of education

Abstract: Les Mouseia en Asie Mineure : espaces publics de culture et institutions éducatives

Le but de cet article est d’analyser les sources disponibles concernant les Mouseia d’Asie Mineure. Ceux-ci ne sont pas attestés par les sources littéraires mais apparaissent dans les inscriptions d’Ephèse, Pergame, Smyrne, Magnésie-du-Méandre, Mylasa, Stratonicée, Antioche-de-Pisidie, Pergè, Sidè, Halicarnasse et Tavium en Galatie. La documentation est analysée de manière à déterminer quels Mouseia parmi ceux qui sont cités renvoient au Musée d’Alexandrie, quels autres évoquent un Mouseion local ; et dans ce dernier cas, si le Mouseion désigne une institution, un espace public, une association ou quoi que ce soit d’autre. Cette documentation est adossée au contexte intellectuel des cités grecques à l’époque du règne de l’empereur philhellène Hadrien et du mouvement culturel de la Seconde Sophistique.

Abstract: The aim of this chapter is to analyze all the evidence from Asia Minor which refers to Mouseia. Mouseia in Asia Minor are not attested in the literary sources, but they appear in inscriptions from Ephesus, Pergamum, Smyrna, Magnesia on the Meander, Mylasa, Stratonicea, Antioch in Pisidia, Perge, Side, Halicarnassus, and Tavium in Galatia. The evidence is analyzed to determine which attestations of Mouseia refer to the Alexandrine Mouseion and which of them to local Mouseia ; and if the local Mouseia are institutions, public spaces, associations or something else. The evidence will be set in the intellectual context of Greek cities in the reign of the philhellenic emperor Hadrian and during the Second Sophistic.
