Abstract
En los últimos años, se ha incrementado el interés en el estudio del efecto relativo de la edad (RAE, por sus siglas en inglés) en el desarrollo de habilidades cognitivas, motoras y emocionales en estudiantes a nivel mundial. La edad relativa se define como la diferencia de edad entre dos o más individuos dentro de un rango de fechas. En el ámbito educativo, se refiere a la diferencia de edad entre estudiantes que conforman una misma clase (Kawaguchi, 2011; Peña, 2017; Thoren et al., 2016). Debido a la falta de una regla general en cuanto a la fecha de ingreso de los estudiantes, es necesario definir el concepto de edad relativa en cada caso. Se pueden calcular dos formas de edad relativa: por año natural y por corte arbitrario. En el primer caso, se encuentra, por ejemplo, el sistema educativo español, que divide cada año escolar según el año natural. Relative age is defined as the age difference between two or more individuals within a range of dates.
