Abstract
The characteristics of the sine wave grating and its usefulness to construct more complex stimuli, the modulation or contrast transfer function (MTF) and the spatial contrast sensitivity function (CSF) are described. The contribution of neuronal processing and that of the eye's optical system to CSF is differentiated. The relationship between spatial resolution and CSF, spatial frequency channels, the effect of refractive error, age, luminance and pathology in CSF is studied.
