Fotografía, arquitectura y patrimonio: Constantin Uhde y los Monumentos Arquitectónicos de España (1888-1892)

Abstract

Entre 1888 y 1889 el arquitecto alemán Constantine Uhde, catedrático de la Escuela Politécnica de Brunswick, realiza junto con el fotógrafo Paul Altmann dos viajes a España y Portugal que tendrán como resultado la publicación, en Berlín en 1892, del libro, magníficamente ilustrado, sobre la arquitectura y los monumentos de ambos países, Baudenkmäler in Spanien und Portugal. Al año siguiente, Max Junghändel publica sus tres volúmenes sobre la Arquitectura española en sus principales monumentos, con tal éxito que cinco años después, en 1898, se editan también en España con un texto introductorio de Pedro de Madrazo. En pleno debate en torno a las cuestiones de estilo, las referencias históricas y la búsqueda de una “arquitectura nacional”, y cuando la conciencia patrimonial iba calando en la sociedad, las imágenes de Uhde y Altmann son un importante testimonio en torno a la visión del patrimonio arquitectónico español a finales del siglo XIX.

Between 1888 and 1889 the German architect Constantine Uhde, professor at the Brunswick Polytechnic School, together with the photographer Paul Altmann, made two trips to Spain and Portugal which resulted in the publication in Berlin in 1892 of the magnificently illustrated book on the architecture and monuments of both countries, Baudenkmäler in Spanien und Portugal. The following year, Max Junghändel published his three volumes on Spanish Architecture in its principal monuments, with such success that five years later, in 1898, they were also published in Spain with an introductory text by Pedro de Madrazo. In the midst of the debate on questions of style, historical references and the search for a “national architecture”, and when heritage awareness was taking hold in society, Uhde and Altmann’s images are an important testimony to the vision of Spain’s architectural heritage at the end of the 19th century.
