El refranero de Al-Šayj al-Ṭanṭāwi, maestro de orientalistas en San Petersburgo, y sus apuntes folclóricos

Abstract

Al-Šayj Muḥammad ‘Ayyād al-Ṭanṭāwī (1810-1861), emigró a San Petersburgo en 1840 para enseñar a los futuros orientalistas rusos la lengua árabe en sus dos registros, el clásico y el coloquial de El Cairo. Entre su legado, se encuentra un cuaderno manuscrito de cuentos cortos; tras editarlo y estudiarlo, se concluye que nueve de estos cuentos fueron creados por el autor para explicar siete refranes y dos grupos de versos populares. En este artículo, se estudia este material con sus historietas y se recalcan las aportaciones del autor en lingüística y en el estudio del folclore.

Al-Shayj Muḥammad 'Ayyād al-Ṭanṭāwī (1810-1861), migrated to St. Petersburg in 1840 to teach to the future Russian Orientalists the Arabic language in its two registers, the classical and the Cairene varieties. Among his legacy, there is a handwritten notebook containing short stories. By editing and studying this notebook, one concludes that nine of these short stories were created by the author to explain seven proverbs and two groups of popular verses. In this article, we study these sayings and verses with their short stories as well as the author’s contribution in linguistics and folkloric fields.
