Abstract

In a world where recommenders are part of our day-to-day life, Safeway is born, a recommendation system based on context that tries to promote road safety by giving it a different approach and with a greater degree of originality what we have known so far. And, although as its name suggests, the main objective of Safeway was none other than to recommend safe routes, we have seen that it is not limited to that. Most browsers base their route recommendations on speed, offering the user the shortest route between an origin and a destination, without worrying about whether it is also the fastest and safest. This is precisely one of the motivations on which this idea was built, that of taking one more step in the recommendation, considering, in addition to the time spent, the risk posed by the different travel alternatives between two different geographical points. To do this, based on all the recorded information about the different traffic accidents that occurred in the United Kingdom during the last year, as well as the conditions or the moment in which they took place, the level of danger offered by each one was calculated one of these roads, managing to provide the greatest degree of safety at the wheel. During the development of the application, many of the efforts employed focused on two aspects considered vital for any user wishing to use the tool, such as visualization and context. If the human brain retains and understands in a much more agile and efficient way everything that it sees, why settle simply to obtain a good result in the recommendation? Safeway not only wants to offer a safe result. Its main objective is that the user visually understands the reason for each and every one of the recommendation provided, considerably increasing the degree of confidence generated by the application on it. This ambition made the visualization of data play a fundamental role in the implementation and development of the application. Another aspect that has been essential during the entire development of the project was the context. Based on the fact that not all users are equal, or need to have the same needs, how could we not consider the personalization of our results important, depending on the context of each individual? This concern led Safeway to incorporate among its functionalities the decision-making capacity of the user, choosing for themselves which aspects they consider the most important within the context of their and taking them into account when making his recommendations for safe routes. In this way, taking as pillars of our recommendation both concepts (visualization and context), and building the idea without neglecting important aspects such as clarity or simplicity in the interface, it was possible to develop an application available to all types of users. It offers multiple functionalities where each one of them contributes a small advance that leads towards a common goal, to promote road safety, with the idea that the important thing is not only the time spent on the road, but also running the least possible risks.
