From Canterbury to the Duero—An Early Example of Becket’s Martyrdom Iconography in the Kingdom of Castile

Abstract

The church of San Miguel of Almazán (Soria, Spain) houses a twelfth-century antependium ornamented with scenes of Thomas Becket’s martyrdom. Discovered during restoration works in 1936, its origin and its original location are unknown. The aim of this article is twofold—to frame its manufacture chronologically in light of recent research on late-Romanesque sculpture in Castile, and to use this information to discover who commissioned this work: The bishops of Sigüenza, whose diocese included Almazán? The canons of the monastery of Allende Duero built at the foot of Almazán’s town wall? Or, as has always been claimed, the Castilian Monarchs Alfonso VIII and Eleanor of England, who were the chief promoters of the Becket cult in their dominions? Whatever the answer, this relief is one of the earliest examples of Canterbury saint iconography in the Crown of Castile.</jats:p>

La iglesia de San Miguel de Almazán (Soria, España) alberga un antependio del siglo XII ornamentado con escenas del martirio de Tomás Becket. Descubierta durante unas obras de restauración en 1936, se desconoce su origen y su ubicación original. El objetivo de este artículo es doble: enmarcar cronológicamente su fabricación a la luz de investigaciones recientes sobre la escultura tardorrománica en Castilla, y utilizar esta información para descubrir quién encargó esta obra: ¿Los obispos de Sigüenza, en cuya diócesis se encontraba Almazán? ¿Los canónigos del monasterio de Allende Duero construido al pie de la muralla de Almazán? ¿O, como siempre se ha afirmado, los reyes castellanos Alfonso VIII y Leonor de Inglaterra, quienes fueron los principales impulsores del culto a Becket en sus dominios? Cualquiera que sea la respuesta, este relieve es uno de los primeros ejemplos de iconografía del santo de Canterbury en la Corona de Castilla.
