Abstract
This paper describes the opinions of the leaders of the Portuguese public libraries page/Facebook profile on the fulfillment of the social mission of the public library through this social network. This work is set in a more extensive investigation whose main purpose is to contribute to a reflection on the theme The Social Mission of the Public Library, investigating this aspect in the behavior of the Portuguese public libraries and analyzing how they work it on Facebook. We used the questionnaire survey that was carried out to 99 professionals and to those responsible for managing/ editing of the Facebook pages of the Portuguese public libraries, by e-mail in March 2014, designed in the online software eSurvey Creator. Quantitative data are not presented in this paper. We present the results of one of the two open questions. These answers were subjected to content analysis through the support of the software for qualitative analysis WebQDA. The answers about the opinion of the respondents on the question allow to highlight the thematic categories, firstly the Communication, then the Social area, Information, Community Creation and finally in the area of Marketing. The opinions reveal a poorly defined vision of the concept of social mission of the public library and on the strategic potential of Facebook to accomplish this mission. There is the opinion of some of the libraries responsibles who say it is not Facebook itself that enforces social mission, but the understanding of the network as a mean to accomplish this mission. Therefore, Facebook is a mean which enables the development of the mission. From the data obtained emerge several concerns and questions of those in charge of libraries on the use of the Facebook in this social mission.
