Abstract
El Certificado Médico de Defunción (CMD) es un documento médico legal cuyas principales funciones son inscribir el fallecimiento de una persona en el registrocivil y utilizar las causas de muerte del certificado para realizar las estadísticas de mortalidad de la población y, así, desarrollar las políticas de salud pública. El CMD debe cumplimentarse en muertes naturales con antecedentes que permitan deducir la causa de la muerte y en ausencia de signos de muerte violenta. Pese a su importancia, y aun siendoun acto médico más, los médicos presentan en ocasiones reticencias a su cumplimientolo que conlleva la judicialización innecesaria de muertes naturales con el daño moral innecesario y evitable a los familiares. The Medical Death Certificate (MDC) is a medico-legal document whose main functions are to register the death of a person in the civil registry and to use the causes of death on the certificate to produce mortality statistics for the population andthus develop public health policies. The MDC must be completed for natural deaths withmedical backgrounds that allow deduction of the cause of death in the absence of signs of violent death. Despite its significance, and though it is just another medical task,physicians sometimes exhibit reluctance in its completion, leading to unnecessaryjudicialization of natural deaths with avoidable and unnecessary emotional distress to the relatives.
