Abstract
The surveyor was one of the officials involved in the management of space and urban planning in the town and municipal boundary of Madrid during the Ancien Régime. This article addresses his access to the profession from a documentary point of view, through the records preserved in the Villa de Madrid Archive, as far as the 18th century is concerned. To this end, we have identified the processes that, in one way or another, led to their appointment and the documentation that resulted from these processes; their typologies have been analysed using diplomatic criteria, considering their internal structure and documentary tradition. The process used in each case generated a series of specific documents, the composition of which was also affected by the legal business they dealt with.
