Homenaje a la Sirena de Varsovia

Abstract

La sirena que aparece en el escudo de Varsovia y en monumentos de la misma ciudad presenta diferencias notables con las sirenas de la mitología clásica y con personajes afines en el folklore eslavo, en general, y polaco, en particular. Así lo muestran las artes plásticas y cuentos como el de Artur Oppman o los transmitidos por los guías turísticos e internet. Y creemos que han sido las artes plásticas las que más han contribuido a la mitificación del personaje y las que han inspirado, a su vez, los relatos de la tradición oral y de la literatura escrita.

The Siren appearing on the coat of arms of Warsaw and in monuments of the same city shows remarkable differences in comparison with the Sirens of Classical mythology and with similar creatures of Slavic, in general, and, more specifically, Polish folklore. This is shown by visual arts and by tales like the one by Artur Oppman or those transmitted through tourist guides and the Internet. And we believe that plastic arts have had the largest share in the process of the Warsaw Siren’s becoming a mythical creature, and that they have inspired both oral and written narratives.
