Abstract
Despite the fundamental role that vaults play in the construction of a building, it seems that only relative attention has been paid to them, judging by the few lines that usually occupy their description compared to those dedicated to the whole building (save in exceptional cases), as well as the scarcity of joint studies. Studying the cloistered vaults that are not included in what is generically called Mudejar architecture, but are found in works that as a whole belong to the area of Western European architecture filiation (Romanesque and Gothic) has become the main objective of this research, in order to analyze its origin, technical evolution, and diffusion, in the wide spatiotemporal frame that covers from the beginnings of the Romanesque period to the end of the permanence of the Muslims in the Iberian Peninsula. On the one hand, multiple traces made in the historiographical documentation since Antiquity, in which we have reviewed the vaults characteristic of each period, to locate the origin of the vaults that concern us; and on the other, the unification of criteria of typology, given the different definitions and variety of terminology existing (fundamentally since the nineteenth century), have served us as a basis to fundament the research, together with the direct study of vaults...
