Charles Clifford y su imagen en España

Abstract

La presente investigación analiza la producción fotográfica y escrita del misterioso fotógrafo británico Charles Clifford realizada fundamentalmente en España entre 1852-1863. Debido a la situación del país en aquella época, la monarquía y las relaciones con Gran Bretaña, el contexto es complejo y cambiante pero determinante a la hora de comprender unas imágenes geográficamente dispersas y en parte desaparecidas, pero capaces de construir, junto con sus palabras, una imagen personal de España.La primera parte de la investigación se sitúa en el escenario madrileño adonde llegó Clifford en 1850. Se analiza el ambiente sociocultural de la capital española y el negocio fotográfico al que Clifford pasó a formar parte para atender a la creciente demanda de ser retratados de los miembros de la realeza, aristocracia y nueva burguesía. Por último, se abordan las relaciones políticas entre Gran Bretaña y España que acababan de entrar en una nueva fase de entendimiento en el contexto de un periodo de expansión y modernización de España...My doctoral research analyses the photographs and writings of the enigmatic British photographer Charles Clifford (1819-1863) carried out mainly in Spain between 1852 and 1863. Owing to the situation of Spain at the time, the monarchy and its relations with Britain, the context of this analysis is complex and changeable but decisive when it comes to understanding photographs that are geographically dispersed and to some extent missing, but capable, nonetheless, of constructing, together with his words, Clifford’s personal image of Spain.The first part of this study examines the setting in which Clifford arrived in 1850: Madrid. In it, I analyse the sociocultural factors at play in Spain’s capital at that time, as well as the photography business which Clifford soon came to form a part of to meet the growing demand of the public of that era, which included the monarchy, aristocracy and new bourgeoisie, to have a photographic portrait. Finally, I explore the political relations between Britain and Spain, which had just entered a phase of renewed understanding in the context of a period of expansion and modernization in Spain...
