Abstract
Summary: Introduction. Feminism is a theory and political practice articulated by women who, after analysing the reality in which they live, become aware of the discrimination they suffer solely for being women and decide to organise themselves to put an end to it and to change society (Wollstonecraft, 2013, 14). Since 1984, research has been conducted on female political leadership, the results of which are hardly surprising: women are underrepresented compared to men, images and texts reinforce the traditional and stereotypical role of women, and alternative models—though present in Spanish society—are largely absent (Viladot i Presas, 2008). Objectives. This research aims to determine whether the media have evolved in their portrayal of female leadership and whether ideology influences the way it is reflected. By tracking the representation of Yolanda Díaz—Deputy Prime Minister and presidential candidate for Sumar—in two Spanish digital media outlets with differing editorial stances (abc.es and elpais.com), the study analyses whether there is gender inequality in the coverage in which she features as the main subject, whether implicit biases and prejudices are prevalent, and whether stereotypes are reinforced or not. Methodology. A discourse analysis was conducted on news items published over a four-month period, using a bespoke table with variables based on the study by Gárces Ortíz et al., 2019. Results. The research shows that the gender inequality gap in the political sphere as depicted by the media is gradually being addressed, that women appear as protagonists when their role warrants it—regardless of the outlet’s ideology—and that the stereotypes identified differ between the two newspapers. On abc.es, the focus is on highlighting transgressive behaviour or social relationships, while on elpais.com, the emphasis is on intellectual capacity.
