Abstract
The genus Peronopsis is one of the most diverse genera within the Order Agnostida. They have a wide geographical distribution in the middle Cambrian. This taxon has a very conservative shape with small differences between species. However, so far there is not any study that quantifies the shape variation and allows us a better taxonomic classification. Peronopsis fallax and Peronopsis ferox are two species from the Cantabrian Mountains (North Spain), than exemplify this problem. The difference between both species deals with slightly variations in the relative length of the pygidia axis. The classical methods of shape analysis (i.e. bivariate analysis and multivariate), and geometric morphometrics approach (i.e. landmarks and semi-landmarks) have shown an allometric growth pattern in the axis. The results suggest that differences between both species are drove for allometric growths. Therefore, these differences are likely due to an intraspecific variation and no taxonomic variation. In conclusion, Peronopsis fallax and Peronopsis ferox are the same species, so Peronopsis ferox will be a synonym of Peronopsis fallax.
