Abstract
The presence of the Chinese population in Spain has experienced a remarkable growth in the last decade. This trend has been accompanied by an increase in the number of children of Chinese origin in our educational system. But despite the fact that the Chinese population constitutes the fifth largest ethnic group in this country, studies about this group are still relatively scarce. In order to learn more and better about this group, this thesis aims to understand the state of school integration of students of Chinese origin. The research is approached from three dimensions inherent to the process of school integration: language competency, academic performance and sense of belonging. In addition, for them, the impacts of educational agents - teachers and classmates - on the process, as well as the influence of parents on their children's school life, are also taken into account. From the methodological point of view, a qualitative approach was chosen to achieve the research objectives. Forty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted with students of Chinese origin who were attending Compulsory Secondary Education in Madrid, as well as 16 interviews with their parents, with the aim of finding out the role that parents play in the integration of their children at school. The contact and personal interactions with these interviewees over several months allowed the author to obtain a better observation of them and, therefore, a more comprehensive view to explain the process and state of their school integration...
