Abstract
There is currently no unanimously accepted definition of alliteration, despite the numerous studies dealing with the subject. The disagreement between authors has obscured the semantic outline of the resource, to the point of confusing it with other stylistic procedures, such as polyptoton, paronomasia, onomatopoeia and imitative harmony. Our study aims to offer a definition of alliteration based on both the testimony of ancient Latin grammarians and rhetoricians, together with the dialogue Actius by Pontano (15th Century), where the figure is so named for the first time. We will also try to analyse the use of this procedure in the Latin world, specifically among the poets of the archaic period Livius Andronicus, Naevius, Ennius, Pacuvius, Accius, Plautus and Terence, as this is the period in which alliteration was used most often. However, in order to provide an overview of the whole which can help us understand better the characteristics and operation of the figure, we have had to deal on several occasions with poets from other periods, particularly the classical period, and prose writers...
